I have owned several different Fossil leather products over the years, and they have all exceeded my expectations with regards to durability. Fossil’s messenger bag is exactly what is expected from a messenger bag. Nothing elaborate, but looks and feels great.

One of the coolest and most unique things about this piece is the wheel locking mechanism. It’s actually a nifty dial on the back you can turn to “stop” or “go”.

The Delsey Chatelet Carry-On comes in 4 colors: Champagne, Brown, Black, and Chocolate/tan. My initial concern with lighter colors is that it would quickly become dirty looking, but thankfully the material wipes clean easily.

The great thing about the Copilot is its unique fabric. It’s not the typical textured nylon. Instead, it’s a nylon reinforced tarpaulin. The result is fantastic. It looks more modern and sleek than most fabric luggage, cleans easily, and is difficult to stain.

The wheels are super quiet, smooth and replaceable! There are grab handles on all four sides; fabric ones on the top, left, and right and a plastic handle on the bottom that doubles as a foot.

The Timbuk2 Copilot has mesh dividers on both sides, not just on one side like most luggage. And there are 2 zippered pockets on the right mesh divider. In addition to those compartments, the very front of the Copilot has a thin pocket to store a 13″ laptop or tablet. It’s sufficiently padded and makes it easy to access while waiting in the airport, on the bus, or from the overhead bin.

Above the thin, laptop-style pocket is a zippered compartment on the very top. It doesn’t hold much, but it’s great to hold small items like a phone charger, tickets, or small food items.

In a recent experiment, a company tested 31 pieces of carry-on luggage over 3 years. Quality, durability and convenience were put to the test. Among the top 5 luggage performers was the Travelpro Crew 10 Carry-On. If you are looking for contemporary style or a wipeable hardcase, this suitcase is not for you. But if you need a tried-and-true carry-on that can hold up for years, the Crew 10 owns it.

The external fabric is a high quality nylon with a DuraGuard coating. This means that it can take a beating and still look great. DuraGuard also helps the luggage to resist be resistant to stains and is water repellent.

Ease of maneuverability is one of my favorite things about the Travelpro Crew 10. Self-aligning, magnetic dual wheels help the luggage roll in a straight line. The magnetic effect is noticeable but not overpowering.

Lots of organizational options are possible with the Crew 10 carry-on. It’s got several interior pockets. The main compartment has a mesh pocket the length of the bag. There is also a durable wet bag for storing damp clothing and removable suit-bag.

Well-placed exterior pockets also make it easier to stay organized. Two easily accessible front pockets are perfectly placed for storing travel documents or things you wish to reach quickly. The second pocket is big enough to keep a laptop safely tucked in, but easy to access.

As far as durability goes this piece of luggage isn’t lacking anything. Originally designed for flight crew, Travlepro bags are made with the frequent traveler in mind.

This one can take a beating regularly and still come out fine.

For this list I tried to pick a variety of carry-on luggage that would different groups. Obviously, for this Rockland 20″ Carry-On the primary selling point is the variety of bold design patterns.

It is also the cheapest of the all the carry-on luggage on this list, for the budget shoppers out there.

The abstract playful designs makes it so unique among the thousands or more bags at a crowded airport. And there are 9 different fun patterns to choose from. Their most popular is the Rockland Owl design.

On the inside, it has a zippered pocket one side and a crisscross elastic band on the other. There is also a small zippered pocket on the interior edge for small items.

Because the Rockland carry-on is so cheap I thought it might also feel cheap. But it actually feels very stable and durable.

It’s made of 100% ABS, which I’ve had several pieces of luggage in the same material. It always seems to hold up well without cracking or breaking.

Delsey is well-known for their luxury design and contemporary style. This carry-on is another impressive piece by Delsey.

I love the professional look and lightweight yet sturdy feel of the Delsey Helium Aero Carry On. The hardcase design is durable and the price is lower than most Delsey luggage options.

The fully lined interior offers two packing compartments. One side is with a zippered divider, along with compression straps behind the compartment. On the same side is an extra small zipper pocket.

The hardcase is 100% polycarbonate like many Delsey suitcases. It’s not only attractive but more importantly very durable while still being lightweight.

By the way, all the zippers are different colors so that you know which zipper is for what. That’s the first time I’ve seen that.

Ribs across the front of the case seem to help reduce bowing when heavy items are placed on top of it (when closed). The corners appear sturdy and I didn’t read any reviews about them cracking, as is the problem with some hardside luggage.

A more common complaint is that the case scuffs easily. This is an issue with most hardcase luggage. And because of the glossy finish, the scuffs or scratches stand out even more. But this is a drawback you have to except unless you go with textured (Delsey Chatelet) or matte-finish hardcase luggage (Samsonite Inova).

Bluesmart is the new kid in the luggage market. It is also the world’s FIRST Smart Luggage.

Founded by two guys who got tired of losing luggage, the Bluesmart One was released in August of 2015. As a tech startup, they funded their research and develop through Indiegogo, a popular crowd-funding website.

Most likely you have heard of external battery chargers, or battery packs. Basically they are larger versions of the batteries that you have your in smartphone or tablet. You charge that battery to then charge your mobile devices when you are away from an electrical outlet. They are really great for travelling. If you are interested in this suitcase then it’s also quite probable that you already have one.

So what is the Bluesmart luggage have for it’s battery pack? According to their website it has a 10.400 mAh capacity battery. This should charge your phone 5-6 times. Nice.

As expected, the battery is FAA approved, so you should not have issues in USA at least.

It also has 2 USB ports so you can charge more than one device simultaneously.

Ok, so is this feature really that important? Everyone’s phone runs low on battery while traveling. If already have an external battery pack then this only offers the convenience of not forgetting it or having to remove it from your bag. But if you don’t have a battery pack yet, then this is a nice bonus. And I can promise you, that once you have enjoyed having a battery pack with you while traveling, you will never want to go without one.

This is definitely a very unique feature. And one that cannot be added to your existing luggage from a stand-alone product.

The feature works along with your smartphone. Just download the iOS (iPhone) or Android app and sync it with your Bluesmart One suitcase. This allows you to lock or unlock the luggage via your smartphone.

Another feature is the automatic locking when out of range. This means if you (with your smartphone) get out of range from your suitcase, then it will lock. So whatever the reason for you being away from your luggage, it will always be locked. For me, I am definitely impressed with this. Although unlikely, but if my luggage was ever stolen, or (more likely) the housekeeper at the hotel decides to take a peek, then I’m good.

If you don’t want to use the app, you can manually lock and unlock it as well. Two keys are provided. And of course the lock is TSA approved, so they can open it for searching if need be.

After setting it up with your smartphone’s app, this allows you to track where your luggage is. It has a SIM card and has global coverage with Telefonica. I really appreciate how they don’t try to stiff you with a subscription or fee to use this service. Many companies would offer a complimentary subscription for a year and then drop you. So kudos to Bluesmart with this.

When I was first introduced to the Bluesmart One, someone criticized the GPS feature, saying it was a waste for a carry-on suitcase. And at first it seemed like he was right – that it was was a useless feature.

But then I thought about some of the smaller domestic flights that often require even small luggage to be checked, whether its because of small overhead compartments, or because of a fully booked flight. And if you have your laptop or other electronics in that bag, you definitely want to always know where it is. Plus, what if it’s stolen? Or you forget and leave it on the bus or in a taxi? Yeah, I’m sold on the GPS tracking now.

Although rare, at times you are asked to weigh your carry-on. And what’s a real bummer is if you are over and could have simply moved an item into a one of your checked bags… that you have now already checked. I know. It’s happened to me before.

Well I must admit this luggage scale is as easy as it can get. You simply lift the bag up by the handle for a few seconds, and the weight is shown on the Bluesmart app on your mobile device. And for many of us, we are too lazy to go buy a dedicated luggage scale for $20, so this is a great feature.

The Bluesmart One luggage has a very unique and polished appearance.

First, it combines a hardcase design with a nylon fabric front compartment. This provides a nice sturdy shape while giving it a different look. The nylon fabric, though, is really to pad any electronic device you put into the front compartment.

An increasingly more common design choice with suitcases is hubless spinner wheels. They roll smoothly, quietly, and look sweet. The blue innards give it a nice flare.

No issue with the handle. It’s solid and retracts smoothly.

You might notice in that the USB charger ports are behind the retractable handle. It’s not a huge deal, but I do wish that the ports were located an inch further down so that the handle did not interfere when fully down. But hey. As long as you don’t slam the handle all the way down when your mobile device is charging, it’s not an issue.

A rare feature with hardcase suitcases is a front compartment. Fabric luggage has long had them. But obviously you could not put anything important there as it was unprotected.

But with the hardcase on the sides and a nicely padded front pocket, your laptop or tablet can safely be stored there. Granted, having easy access this way does not good once your carry-on is stowed away in the overhead bin. However, while waiting at the airport, on the bus, or when going through airport security, being able to pull out your laptop in 2 seconds is a really nice change. In fact, I think I might be able to leave my laptop bag home now. I would have never done that before if I had to unzip the entire suitcase to grab it.

Of course, the front compartment is limited in size. Tablets should have no issue. As for laptops, I think most newer thin 15″ ones and smaller will fit fine. If you have a larger 17″ laptop or an older thick one, then I don’t think it will be big enough as it can be quite snug once the suitcase is fully packed. But then again, if you are spending hundreds on a suitcase I would imagine that you don’t have an old clunky laptop!

Like most mid-range and up suitcases, the Bluesmart One has a zippered divider on both sides. I’ve mentioned this before, but really all luggage should have this.

Some will only have one divider. But if you start to open the suitcase upside down, then half of your stuff will start to fall out. With a divider on both sides, everything stays put and it provides nice pockets for toiletries and so forth.

The only negative I see with the interior is that the top half is a little limited because it shares part of the space with the front compartment for your laptop. But hey. It’s not magic. Something has to be sacrificed to gain the front compartment. Just be aware though, that because of this you can only pack shoes on the bottom half (except for some women’s flats maybe).

The hardcase sides seem to be quite durable and can take a beating.

Bluesmart One’s hubless wheels appear to be design and built well, along with the handle.

A unique aspect of the Bluesmart Luggage is that it has a nylon fabric front in conjunction with the hardcase. Now the fabric is black, but fabric can still nonetheless get soil or torn. Since this is a carry-on suitcase, though, it will probably not be so much an issue as checked bags are what really take the abuse.

Ok so at a price point like this, there is some sticker shock. But it’s hard to judge how reasonable the price is because there are no real competitors yet in the Smart Luggage market. No doubt this will change with time and Bluesmart will have to lower their price to compete. But for now, you will pay to be one of the first to have smart luggage.

To determine if the Bluesmart One’s “smart” features are reasonably priced, let’s build a smart suitcase with stand-alone products.

Now of course, you could get all of that cheaper with a lower-end carry-on suitcase and save $150. But the Bluesmart One is not a cheap poly hardcase with techy features. So comparing creme brulee to creme brulee here, then the Bluesmart One is within $30-$80 of a suitcase with the same features.

So is the Bluesmart worth spending up to $80 more? Well it depends. Do you really want the Remote Locking feature? Then this is your only option, as it cannot be added to other suitcases. Do you want to buy and bring a separate luggage scale, GPS tracker, and battery pack? If not, then this is your only option.

To reach a larger market, the Bluesmart should really retail for $50-$75 less. But personally, I love to bring as few things as possible when traveling. It’s less to forget to bring and less to accidentally leave behind in a hotel. Plus it has a cool LED light in the front. It probably only cost $1 to add, but it looks totally sci-fi. And I like sci-fi.

It’s possible that the occasional remote locking glitch has since been resolved from a firmware update, as it’s been a number of months since those reviews were posted. Or maybe not. I was not able to find anything on their website as to firmware updates.

Now having issues with security screening is definitely something to consider if you are traveling out of country. The issue comes from the integrated battery pack since those are typically removed from your luggage during the screening. Most people who said they had issues had connecting flights in Middle Eastern and African airports, like Dubai, Qatar, Cairo and so on. I think TSA agents in the USA may have had more exposure to the Bluesmart One, as I have not read of anyone having an issue in the USA or Canada. But if you travel to those more cautious countries then it might be best to stick with external battery packs.

The Rockland Owl or Rockland Carry-On 20″ is a trendy and playful suitcase. It really caught my eye as the colorful design is unique and fun. I don’t think anyone could ever mistake this bag for another because it’s so different from your standard boring one color luggage.

I also love that this piece of luggage from Rockland is sturdy, but not bulky. It’s lightweight and easy to manage on it’s 4 smooth rolling wheels, even when I’m racing through the airport.

There are a number of popular features not present here with the Rockland Owl carry-on series. Like a TSA lock and dual interior dividers. But because the Rockland luggage comes in at such a cheap price point, we can’t knock off too many points. After all, you don’t expect all the bells and whistles at an entry price.

I love how much this Rockland Carry-On stands out. The abstract playful designs makes it so unique among the thousands or more bags at a crowded airport. And there are 9 different fun patterns to choose from. Their most popular is the Rockland Owl design.

There is a sturdy retractable handle on top in a nice modern silver/grey color. There are also non-retractable handles on the top and side in the same grey color. The handles seem to be very strong, and look like they will hold up well.

I’m usually running through the airport because my layover is too short…or I lose track of time in the perfume store sampling the scents. So, as I’m jogging through the airport smelling like a garden, it’s helpful that the Rockland Carry-On has 4 really smooth running wheels to keep up with me.

The exterior has a nice glossy finish that can be easily wiped down. Which I love because, God knows who or what touched my luggage along the way. Antibacterial wipes to the rescue!

The Rockland carry-on 20″ in 9 colors:

My absolute favorite colors are the owl character print and the tribal design. The owl design actually seems to be the biggest seller, as many sites list this product as the Rockland Owl carry-on. The owls really are so cute and colorful with big cartoonish eyes. A definite gift for my travel loving 10 year old niece! Little girls will love these designs especially if they feel they’re now too cool for Disney Princess and Barbie luggage.

It’s really a look I love for me too though, as a “grown” woman. The tribal print is so trendy with it’s multicolored horizontal stripes and chevron print. A great way to be stylin’ your travelin’ girls.

The snake and crocodile print are my least favorite because they are a little dark, so they don’t stand out as much. However, I suppose if someone wanted something with a bit more of a mature look they could go for the snake or crocodile prints. I would consider buying these prints for my mother though. In fact she probably already has shoes or a handbag to match!

For organizing purposes, which I always need help with, I love the interior of this Rockland Carry-On. It has zippered pockets inside which helps sort things and keeps everything from shifting.

On one side there is a zippered section that spans the length of the bag, so you can securely separate items. I especially like the little pocket in the middle. That’s wear I pack my underwear. Because seriously as TSA is ruffling through my bag with dozens of onlookers, I want my delicates to stay delicately tucked away.

Opposite the zipped side there is a crisscross elastic band. That’s always a nice feature because when you open up the bag mid-flight, everything doesn’t go falling out.

The lining inside has a fun pattern too. Depending on the color option chosen, the interior is either light or dark grey with little white circles. Or some of the Rockland luggage options (like the heart designed theme) are pink and white polka dots inside.

Because the Rockland carry-on is so cheap I thought it might also feel cheap. But it actually feels very stable and durable.

It’s made of 100% ABS, which I’ve had several pieces of luggage in the same material. It always seems to hold up well without cracking or breaking.

It is carry-on luggage, which is meant for a few days’ worth of clothes. Packing more than that could cause the zipper to stretch too far and break. It seems like some have packed it too much and posted about broken zippers. But for this low price, you can’t treat the bag like a Samsonite. It should be used for what it’s designed for and not overloaded.

As I thoroughly researched this carry-on I saw some people reporting that their case got scratched up easily. Unfortunately, most hardside suitcases do get scratched over time. What I like about this case though, is that the abstract patterns hide scratches easier than solid colors would. Scratches are inevitable especially with a cheaper material, but at least they aren’t too noticeable on this Rockland carry-on. Hey, it’s a small concession to save $100 over mid-grade luggage options.

This Rockland carry-on starts at around $55 or so, depending on how much you catch it on sale.

There is no questioning that this is an economy piece of luggage. You can’t get a piece of new luggage much cheaper than the $50 price point.

An economy price often brings an economy design and bad durability. But I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of construction for such an affordable carry-on. Good job Rockland!

Hopefully you haven’t been there, but for those who have had their luggage lost it’s a nightmare. Delsey has helped a little in this area by including an identification plate on the back.

One of the coolest and most unique things about this piece is the wheel locking mechanism. It’s actually a nifty dial on the back you can turn to “stop” or “go”. So while you’re jetting through an airport because your layover was too short, turn to “go” and well, go! When waiting in line, hit “stop” to keep it from rolling off. Now why don’t all suitcases have this feature?

Overall color options are stylish and expensive looking. That luxury “posh” vibe is all over this suitcase. I especially love the two-toned look of the contrasting but complementary leather details.

To me, many hardside suitcases look so… industrial. Utilitarian. You know, like men designed it for… men. But with the Chatelet model, Delsey has given it a soft, subtly feminine look with the same durability of other hard cases. Don’t worry though guys, it’s not pink. So it’s still okay to own one!

Some sites describe the Champagne color as ivory. My initial concern with lighter colors is that it would quickly become dirty looking, but thankfully the material wipes clean easily.

The fully lined interior offers two packing compartments with a zippered divider on one side and tie-down straps on the other. I love how the compartments can separate bulky rough items like shoes, toiletries, and power charges from more delicate and expensive clothing. Plus after a few days, the used clothes can go on one side and fresh ones on the other.

It also comes with 2 separate matching bags made of the same soft lining. When traveling I always have to remember to bring extra bags to separate my dirty shoes or clothes, so I love the fact these 2 bags are included. So much more stylish than a grocery bag! There is also even a flexible clothes hanger inside.

One of my favorite features of the Delsey Chatelet is how even the inside lining was given attention. It’s a bold but elegant crimson red color. Which I absolutely love. What an improvement over the standard 50 shades of gray most use for the interior.

The Delsey Chatelet Spinner comes in 3 additional sizes, besides the 21″ that I am reviewing – 19″, 24″, and 28″.

The hardcase is constructed from 100% Bayer virgin makrolon polycarbonate. Which is awesome. Ok… so I honestly had no idea what that actually is. But I researched it. Apparently it’s the latest and greatest. This plastic is an exceptionally strong yet flexible material and can handle temperatures up to 298 degrees Fahrenheit. You know, just in case you get the urge to set your luggage near a fire.

As I read thoroughly through customer reviews many reviewers say this case is practically invincible. I guess this is due to the Bayer makrolon poly it is designed from. One website went has far as to say this plastic is “shatter proof”. So extremely durable, even after months of use. The wheels especially are known to hold up well.

I think the biggest proof that the Delsey Chatelet is built for years of use, is their warranty. They provide an impressive 10 year limited warranty. Not many other companies do that. Samsonite does a 10 year warranty on some of their luggage products, but hey, their entire brand is built around durability. Designer luggage, though, with a good warranty make this piece a great buy.

The Delsey Chatelet Luggage an economy piece? Not so much. It’s a little pricey compared to other hardside luggage. But I think it looks more expensive than it is. It truly looks and feels high end. You know, for me I feel like I could walk into a fancy Italian hotel with this and fit right in. With a nice dress and heels of course.

If you are looking for something lower cost, and less “designer-ish” then I suggest the Beverly Hills Country Club Newport or the Rockland Leopard for those wanting something even more bold.

As for the claim of the case being oversize, most airlines accept the measurements for carry-on requirements. This Desley is exactly 22″ with the wheels, and airline regulation is 22″. The real problem is probably more of overhead bins on the airplane being too full, not the size of this piece. If I was really concerned about it not fitting in overhead bins I’d just get the 19″ size, in fact it’s so pretty I want want all 4 sizes!

Everything about the Versapack is designed to hold up during travel. The exterior is made from an exceptionally durable fabric called ballistic nylon. The extension handle is solid, even when fully extended. Let’s not forget the wheels. They are double-wheeled magnetic spinner wheels, which keeps them gliding straight. And smooth, so smooth. The wheels make it feel like you’re driving a luxury car.

An external USB port connects to a battery pack if you’d like, so that you can easily charge your phone or tablet as needed. The battery pack can just be pulled out when going through airport security.

External pockets work great for quickly storing a small laptop, tablet, or toiletries. This is very helpful, because when going through security it can be a hassle to open your carry-on luggage to take out your electronics and toiletries.

As is more common these days, the suitcase unzips on the top instead of in the middle (also known as a clam-shell design). To me, this is the only way to go. It allows for you to pack deeper and utilize packing cubes better. It also makes it so much easier to open the suitcase as there’s nothing to fall out.

A unique feature about the Travelpro Versapack is a removable zip-in compartment/divider that attaches to the interior’s top section. The zip-in compartment that comes with the suitcase is a garment organizer, which could store some nicer items that you don’t want wrinkled. By having them zipped into the top, there shouldn’t be any weight sitting on them, pressing wrinkles into the fabric – smart.

You can purchase additional zip-in organizers to use with the suitcase. There are several to choose from. One is designed more for a suit, others for dirty or wet laundry, and yet another for smaller items.

The Versapack is available in a variety of sizes. We reviewed the 20″ model here, but it also comes in a 21″ carry-on, a medium 25″ checked bag size, and a large 29″ version. You can also purchase the luggage as a 2 or 3 piece set for usually a lower price than buying individually.

Every aspect of Travelpro’s Versapack is built for durability. The fabric is a high-density “ballistic” nylon. Sounds tough, huh? Ballistic nylon was actually originally engineered to protect soldiers from shrapnel. So although your luggage may not be exposed to shrapnel, we all know how much abuse they can take when being tossed around. This fabric, along with the corner guards, should keep the suitcase going strong for years.

Other very durable features are the super sturdy, powerscope extension handle and double spinner wheels. This is important, as even many suitcases that cost $100-$200 will sometimes have an extension handle that doesn’t feel sturdy enough.

The Crew Versapack suitcase isn’t cheap. The 20″ carry-on that we are reviewing usually goes for around $250. That being said, few suitcases can match the durability and shear quality of the Versapack. The wheels glide like butter and the different zip-in dividers is brilliant. If you are looking for luggage that will last you for years and won’t disappoint, then the Crew Versapack is for you.

For great durability but less features, you have the balanced Samsonite Centric, a fan favorite at half the price of the Versapack. Or if you need something just to get by and money is really tight, the AmazonBasics Hardside luggage is also a great choice. But you get what you pay for. And the Travelpro Versapack has some 1000 5-star reviews for a reason – it’s worth it.

Sharp, modern, and nearly futuristic looking. The Samsonite Freeform is lightweight, strong and looks cool. But how function is it and how does it hold up?

The Samsonite Freeform is crafted from of injection molded polypropylene. This is a material know for being durable and incredibly lightweight. This 21″ is just over 6 pounds!  This material is also moisture resistant, so you won’t have to fret about your luggage contents getting wet. As far as aesthetics go, the shell has a ribbed design, with the Samsonite logo placed in the middle. It looks contemporary and clean giving it an heir of sophistication. The ripping is more than just a pretty face though, it adds to the durability of the piece as well.

For the closure, the Freeform is equipped with a sturdy zipper. It also has a second zipper to allow for expansion. The TSA lock is a dial style to keep your luggage contents safe and secure.

The telescopic handle is smartly equipped with a button that locks the position of the handle when pressed. It can be locked to different heights, so everyone it’s adjustable to the users height and preference. There are also 2 carry handles, on the top and side of the suitcase.

The Samsonite Freeform comes in 5 different colors; white, black, navy, sage green and tangerine. I love the clean look of the white case, however I would worry it wouldn’t stay clean, because obviously white things have a hard time staying white. The sage green, is a lovely soft color with a shine. Tangerine is definitely the most bold color, it’s a bright and vibrant orange that would easily stand out in a sea of luggage.

When you open up the Samsonite Freeform, you get two fabric lined packing compartments. The bottom compartment has elastic cross compression straps for keeping your things tidy and in place. Along with that there is a small single zippered pocket. The pocket is an inclusion placed with users in mind, excellent for jewelry or smaller items.

As for the top compartment, it can be fully closed off with a zippered divider. I love when bags include this because you don’t have to worry about about anything falling out! In addition there is a well placed large zippered pocket on the divider, which you can use for any items you want to keep separate.

As mentioned this bag also has the capacity to be expandable, which for me is a must in any luggage. If you pack wisely, it wouldn’t be hard to pack for a week’s trip with this carry-on.

The Samsonite Freeform comes in 3 sizes. The 21″ carry-on I’m reviewing, a 24″ and the largest at 28″.

The shell of this luggage is extremely lightweight and offers exceptional resistance to impact. As with most Samsonite luggage, it is built for longevity. 

This case is also very easy to clean and wipe down. Minor scuffs may occur but users report they typically buff out. 

The Samsonite Freeform can very easily be found on Amazon for around $160 or less, depending on what kind of sale you find. With all the great features this bag has to offer, in 5 different colors it really is a great buy.

Also included is a 10 year limited warranty! Although Samsonite products are rigorously tested to ensure their products meet stringent standards. This bag comes with a 10-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

Started a few years ago in 2016,  XD Design is a Dutch brand and got their start through crowdfunding on the Kickstarter site. So they definitely are a modern example of an idea that has grown into a brand. Their Bobby Original Anti-Theft backpack is actually their first product that got them started. What features does the backpack have and is it worth the price?

The exterior of the Bobby Anti-Theft backpack is very much the less-is-more, modern and minimalistic design. This is also largely due to its anti-theft features, as it’s not easy for anyone to open you backpack and snatch something.

The outside has some reflective stripes if you are traveling outside in the dark – a great safety feature, especially for bike riders. There are also some hidden zippered pockets, such as one in the shoulder strap near your chest. This could hold a small wallet or your ID and credit cards. And if you travel with a powerbank, a USB cable runs through the shoulder strap to the outside so you can charge your phone without opening your backpack.

But besides that, everything is really on the inside. And as they say, it’s the inside that counts right?

The Bobby Original comes in 3 colors: Black, grey, and navy; so your standard colors.

More color variety is seen when you get to their other models like the Compact or Compact Print iterations. These are available in 2-tone colors like Grey with Mint Green, Yellow, or Pink – or patterns like Camouflage or Zebra print. You can only hold a 14″ laptop though, while the Original size holds a 15.6″ laptop, so you sacrifice a couple of inches for the additional color options.

A really helpful feature is that the pack opens at an angle of 30, 90, or 180 degrees. At 90 or 180 degrees you can really organize your items, or find that small thumb drive that has disappeared!

With multiple compartments and zippered pockets, the Bobby really excels at keeping your stuff neat. The Bobby Original holds a 15.6″ laptop. Of course a large tablet also easily fits.

The only downside to all of the organizational packing is if you want to cram books or clothes in there, you have less space. So you really shouldn’t get the Bobby if you looking to tote around school books or pack clothes for a short trip. There are other backpacks designed for traveling. Where the Bobby Anti-Theft shines is with regular commutes, such as walking or by bike, and with expensive items on hand like a tablet, cash, phone, etc.

In our review we have primarily focused on the Bobby Original, which can hold up to a 15.6″ laptop. But there are variations of the Bobby Anti-Theft backpack. For example, the Bobby XL can hold up to a 17″ laptop, while the Bobby Compact is a couple inches smaller and can hold a 14″ laptop.

The weakest part of the Bobby backpack seems to be its durability. Most negative reviews are concerning zippers breaking or the fabric ripping at the seams. By and large most users don’t experience these issues. But there does seem to be some quality control issues.

Another possibility is that many don’t realize the Bobby Anti-Theft isn’t designed to be a hefty backpack with which you tote around heavy school books. Get a Samsonite for that. The fact that it has so many internal organizational compartments shows that the product is designed to carry a variety of items, many smaller and more valuable (thus the need for it’s hidden pockets), and not a few large and heavy items. So, if you purchase the Bobby with that goal, then its durability will most likely meet your needs.

For a modern-design backpack with features like hidden pockets, cut resistance, and illuminating strips the Bobby Anti-Theft backpack is reasonably priced. Usually it can be found for a little under $100, even when not on sale. Considering how many other brand name backpacks are $150-$200, this is a well priced offering from XD Design.

It would be difficult to find a quality backpack with these features without getting a no-name brand.

We often think of backpacks as the choice for students or hikers. But backpacks can be a great luggage option for business professionals on the go as well.

The exterior is fairly standard.

Two exterior pockets are on the front which provide a decent about of space but not for anything too bulky. The handle and straps are nice and solid, as well as the zippers.

On the side is a pocket that can stretch to accommodate a water bottle or such. And on the back there’s a bottom sleeve that allows the backpack to slip over a suitcase handle for easy walking.

The Space Blue color is more like a medium navy blue I would say.

There’s a lot going on here with the inside.

A full size divider allows clothes, shoes, or other items to fit the entire height and width of the backpack.

Additional pockets on the inside make separating documents and other thin items easy. But the abundance of pockets aren’t too useful besides for thinner items.

The memory foam padding allows a laptop and/or tablet to be stored away and be protected. If you travel often with your electronics, then this is a key feature. Just be sure to buy the backpack size that fits your laptop, whether it’s 13″, 15″, or 17″. If you are bringing along a large tablet (like 12″) and it has a rugged case on it, just double check that the 13″ backpack can actually fit it first, otherwise size up.

So their size options are named after the size of laptop you can fit in it, not the actual size of the backpack itself.

The polyester fabric is thick and the stitching is durable. Quality zippers and a handle on the top should allow for years of use.

With the fabric being water resistant, this allows the backpack to keep your electronics safe if caught in a light rain.

Whether Samsonite’s higher price point is worth it or not largely depends on how often you will use it.

I think one of the strongest values for Samsonite luggage is the durability. It will hold up with regular use; often over years. Whereas cheaper products can start to fall apart within months.

So will this be a daily item for work or traveling a number of days each week? Then absolutely it’s worth the price. But if you want something to use for occasional travel then you could probably get by with a lower quality (but equally practical) backpack and save some money.
